Powered paragliding (also known as paramotoring or PPG) is a form of ultralight aviation that uses a motor to provide thrust for a paraglider, allowing the pilot to take off from the ground. This form of flying differs from parasailing or hang gliding in that the powered paraglider can take flight without wind or towing by another vehicle or aircraft. The pilot controls the motor speed, allowing the ultralight aircraft to increase or decrease altitude. In general, there are two types of powered paragliders. Foot-launch powered paragliders use a motor mounted on the pilot’s back. Wheel launch powered paragliders have a motor that is mounted to the back of a wheeled frame (a trike or a quad wheel frame). Both types of powered paragliders use a wing (similar to a parachute) attached to cables that allow the pilot to maneuver the aircraft, and decrease airspeed during landings. The wheel launch powered paragliders can be configured to carry and fly a single person (the pilot) or two people (the pilot and a passenger). Only a short runway (a few hundred feet long) is needed for takeoffs and landing.
A tandem flight is a two-person flight that uses a trike vehicle with two seats (one behind the other) to carry a passenger (in front) and the pilot (me, the owner/operator). With this configuration, the wing is larger, so provides more lift in order to safely support the combined weight of the trike, motor, and two passengers. While flying, the trike sways (gently) at times, and occasionally there are “bumps” of turbulence. These are normal and expected in ultralight aircraft flights (and kinda fun!). We fly very early morning or late evening, when there is less air turbulence as the aircraft flies, ascends, descends, and turns. And the sunrises and sunsets can be absolutely stunning!
